Nick and Jen mix toasted sesame oil into the rice

After a holiday break, several co-op members gathered again Friday to prepare and serve a meal for Occupy Wall Street. On the menu this time, rice mixed with black soy beans, kelp, collards, daikon and black radishes, plus garlic, tamari, and sesame seasoning. Nick and I both utilized our pressure cookers from home to cook the beans, which were soaked overnight at Nick’s place and brought to St. Mark’s Church, where we did the cooking.

Funds for the ingredients came from both donations directly to the co-op, and a $50 stipend from the official OWS Kitchen Group, approved by general assembly.

After we finished cooking and tidying up the kitchen, Lisa, Nick and I transported the food by bike to Liberty Square. We fed a handful of folks gathered there, and then went to the atrium at 60 Wall Street where working groups were coming and going around 3-4pm.

For some it was their first meal of the day, for others a late lunch, and probably an early dinner by the time we left, around 6pm.

The new environmental sustainability program, dubbed the “Model Block” project by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer’s Office, promises to provide residents and storeowners along E. Fourth St. between the Bowery and Second Ave. with new energy-efficient appliances largely funded by the state.

The co-op hasn’t been officially approached about the project, but we’re looking forward to finding more about it.

Banu’s Sesame Sweet Granola


I sent my friend Vicki this recipe. She said, “The granola was really, really good. I say it was the sesame oil that gave it a little je ne sais quoi (the extent of my french).” I don’t actually make measurements for this recipe. I figure what I can hold in my fist is around a quarter cup, so there’s where the measurements come from. Just do what feels right.

• 2-1/2 cups rolled oats
• 1/4 cup flax seed meal (just blend flax seed)
• 1/4 cup flax seeds
3 tbsp raw sugar – the crunchy kind
• 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
• 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
• 
2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp canola oil
• 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil
• 1/4 cup agave nectar
• 1/4 cup maple syrup
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 
1/2 cup raisins
• 1/2 cup dried cranberries

Mix the wet ingredients, pour over the mixed dry ingredients EXCEPT the raisins and dried cranberries. Use your hands, it makes it easier. Line a pan with wax paper or foil. Spread mixture in a layer about a half inch thick – don’t press it down! Bake for an hour at 300, stirring every 20 minutes or so. It’ll still be a bit chewy, but once it’s cool, they’ll get real crunchy. Add the raisins and cranberries AFTER baking, or else they’ll get hard!
