Although 2012 was the Year of Cooperatives, for the 4th Street Food Co-op it might have been the Year of the Bicycle. Several noteworthy events in the last year revolved around pedal power, and Transportation Alternatives bestowed the “Bike Friendly Business” title to us.
In January, members of the co-op and Times Up biked supplies to Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior, and got a tour of the ship, including their bike room!
Shortly after, we got our own bike trailer up and running, in order to pick up additional local produce and dry goods from the Union Square Greenmarket, from vendors who don’t deliver directly to our store. This allows us to source more local items and avoid fossil fuel delivery.
In September we purchased a bike blender, and pedal powered smoothies debuted at FAB fest. The same day, the co-op hosted a stop on Transportation Alternatives’ bike tour, giving out apples to visitors.
The bike blender came out again for a sidewalk potluck and smoothie session in October.
In perhaps the most exciting bike news of the year, in December, Community Board 3 passed a proposal by the city’s DOT to place three new on-street bike parking corrals, including one at the co-op. We will be the maintenance partner for the 20 space corral, responsible for cleaning and shoveling snow. The installation should happen early in 2013.
Other highlights for the year included hosting films at COLORS restaurant and Bluestockings, preparing meals for OWS, May Day, and Occupy Sandy, hosting a group of 6th graders at the co-op, and then helping them with a presentation at their school.
Here’s to 2013 being another productive and cooperative year!
